Because the "Atheist challenges 'In God We Trust" article's discussion section is so flooded with comments, I can no longer post on it.
An atheist who has spent four years trying to ban the Pledge of Allegiance from being recited in public schools is now challenging the motto printed on U.S. currency because it refers to God.
I think this gentleman should go back to a history class...there are many references by the Founding Fathers to a supreme deity and seeking His blessings during the creation of this government. It's unfortunate that it took quite a few years for the government to give recognition to that fact with the use of "In God we trust" on the currency. I agree with the earlier post that stated in part the Founding Fathers did not want the government involved with churches, that it was the other way around....why else would the Congress intone the blessings of God before convening? This is America and everyone is entitled to their opinion and to believe as they will, (why do you thing the amendment against a state supported religion is included in the Constitution besides the fact there would be no taxes charged to the people for a "government church"?) but please, don't start a court case to force your differences on me.
Though atheism is not a religion it is a faith. It seems to me that it is improper that the courts should listen to any faith that is complaining about the other "faith." Still, it is proper to allow both faiths to have freedom to speak in the public forum and allow individuals of the public to draw their own conclusion(s).

I do not understand I am not a religious person but I believe in traditions but in God we trust was here before any of this idiots if we want to change things why don't start with ourselves and when we achieve that may be we can try to change everything else, today God may be the only one we can trust because with scumbags like the one that is trying to make changes who else can you trust
I do agree that if the words "In God We Trust" bother him so much, stop using money! If you don't want to say the Pledge of Allegiance, then don't! But DO NOT try to stop me. I am so tired of people trying to force their non belief on me and other Christians. In order to believe that something does not exist, you have to recognize that it does. Why would you waste 4 years of your life trying to disprove that God exists when the very fact that you wake up each morning is proof? I hope this "so-called doctor and lawyer" repents before it's too late. I will bless the Lord at all times. His praises will continually be in my mouth. Let's pray for his change of heart.

Hey if you don't like that our currency says "IN GOD WE TRUST," then give it to me I could use it.
Can I sue someone because the color of their shirt "offends" me? If it were that easy then I'm going back to college to be a lawyer, because I will never run out of work. I'm tired of hearing about how prayer in school, and the word God offends people. If it offends you don't listen, or don't read it. If this guy doesn't want his children exposed to this phrase on our currency then he is going to have some upset kids. I don't know if he noticed, but kids don't really pay any attention to what money says only the amount on them. I know when I was a kid that was all I cared about and I didn't have the money very long to worry about it.
This could be turned around. I could say an atheist offends me and not having our money say "IN GOD WE TRUST" is offensive to me. All I'm saying is choose your battles wisely, because when he finds out there is a God he'll be wishing he spent more time in church than in the courtroom.
I think as believers in God, file a lawsuit against this man for wasting government money. He has now violated our rights and tax dollars, because our beliefs infringe upon him? If he does not like the statement on American currency, use credit. If he does not like the statement then he does not believe in this country and would that not be considered treason? I believe in God, but I do not ask those practicing another religion to conform everything they do, to my beliefs. Please tell me in this nation that we can stop wasting the tax payer's dollar. This man is now removing government funds that could be used toward education or proper welfare systems, or helping a family in need that has lost a loved one fighting for our rights, and his right for freedom of speech, so he can make his statement. It is sad to see a man with such an education waste my tax dollar.

How can one not believe in God? I have lived rebellious years of my own but there is a link to God within each of us that can not be broken. I can't imagine what terrible thing must have happened in your life to make you so angry at the God you claim not to believe in.
If you remove God, you remove everything good and perfect from the mix. You are removing life. In doing so, you invite pain, suffering, and death.
Look at the US now. The further we push God away, the more rebellious and evil our nation becomes. Cursing replace blessings and we become the tail and not the head. Look at our financial status today. We are now the borrower, no longer the lender. America is loosing it's status. Why? We refuse the blessings because we refuse HIM. Watch the future carefully sir. I have never met an atheist who on dying bed asked God to help. same if same in pain. I have never seen a true atheist in my many years of nursing or a MD
who did not believe in God.
Okay, enough already, I want to know why one person or small group of people have the right to get rid of all the "God" in this country. If they don't like the way this country believes and has believed for over 200 years, I am sure there is somewhere, though I don't know where, for those people to live that they can govern their own country any way they so choose. I cannot believe that 545 government employees, elected by the entire country, will let so few make changes to the money, not to mention the Pledge of Allegiance of this great country, just because they are non-believers in the one thing that this country was founded on. For crying out loud people, if everyone put one dollar in a fund we could surely help to send these Loud-mouth no goods to a deserted island somewhere and we could live like the founding fathers felt would give all of us a United States of America where God is held in high esteem. I for one am sick and tired of people who are tearing down this country. We have been established for over 200 years young and our forefathers with their brilliant insight into the future have warned us against taking "GOD", OUT OF THE PICTURE. Many of the comments submitted in response to this topic are written by zealous individuals who feel as strongly about the existance of God, as Newdow feels about God's nonexistance. The whole issue about separation of church and state, prayer in school, and reference to God on our currency can be linked to a another atheist named O'Hara who successfully got the Supreme Court ban school prayer. When one looks at the 1st Amendment, it states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" What has happened it that atheists only focus on the first part of this constitutional guarantee. They want all reference to God removed from everywhere, not just in Government facilities or on our currency. In their zeal, they neither realize or care, that to achieve their objectives, they will strip others of their constitutional right to freely practice their faith. When you compare the percentages (2% atheists vs. 98% believers) it is easy to see how the whole topic can become volitile. I do not believe that there has ever been an attempt by the government to establish a state religion, but there definitely has been an on-going effort to deny or prohibit individuals the "free exercise" thereof. The practice of "chipping" away at the foundational building blocks on which this republic was established will eventually contribute to its downfall. In our society, the needs of the many must always outweigh the needs of the few.

I cannot understand why if your are an atheist and you are so sure there is no GOD why you are so intimidated by the words GOD and TRUST. Just because you don't believe in GOD or organized religion dos not give you the right to demand change that just suits your minority. People must remember words like "WE THE PEOPLE" not "I THE PERSON" . This person is entitled to his belief. However, he is ignorant to the truth and needs quidance. All of us have been ignorant to certain things in life until we came to know the truth. Until he come to that realization, he will remain in the dark. The only thing that we can do for this individual is tell him what the truth is and pray for him to come to the revelation knowledge that we can do nothing without the power of God dwelling in our lives.
If you say God does not exist than why are you so anxious to change the wording currency? If He is just our imagination than stop being afraid of the word God. I love my Lord and Savior and I would rather get fired from my job and be persecuted than to ever deny Him. I trust in Him in everything I do. 1. If you do not believe in the existence of God then why do you feel so threatened to have it displayed on the currency that the United
States uses.2. Have you stopped using the currency because it displays, " In God We Trust" I doubt it. So I guess you are not adamant that it is "unconstitutional". Or do you grow your own food, walk everywhere you go, make all of your own clothing from the crops that you grow. Oh and did you somehow receive free the land that you grow those crops on! Heard of The Declaration of Independence? It states:

He is trying to force his religion on the rest of the people in the United States, why should One Religion "Atheism" decide how the rest of the country is run??
If this man does not like the USA tell him to leave or better yet just buy him an airline ticket to another country so he can tell those people how to run their country!
